DUKWs (designated by their GMC vehicle classification) was developed independently from the standard military procurement system in anticipation of waterborne invasions that would be a part of any American involvement in World War II. The DUKW was only reluctantly adopted by the US Army, who inititally did not see the need for such a craft. In practice, the DUKW proved an invaluable tool for bringing war material from ships to shore as well as saving thousands of lives by bringing back wounded soldiers to operating rooms in hospital ships off shore.
