S160 Locomotive - US Army Transportation Corps
SGD 1,946.25# BKM6002 It is often claimed by military commanders that “logistics win wars”. When moving troops, an enormous amount of material and supplies are required, ranging from bullets to clean water. During World War II, this task was the job of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps (USATC). Responsible for operations such as the Red Ball Express, the Corps also designed wartime train locomotives. The most prolific of these was the S160 Class locomotive. This inexpensive design was to fulfill the urgent need by Allied nations to move tanks, men, and supplies. Deployed primarily to England under Lend-Lease, 800 of these locomotives were shipped to England. After the Allied invasion at Normandy, hundreds of locomotives were shipped to France to support the drive towards Germany. Over 2,000 S160s were produced during the war. After the war, hundreds of these locomotives were transferred to nations throughout Europe to help the struggling countries rebuild destroyed rail systems. Surviving models can still be seen today, including a fully restored S160 owned and operated by Churnet Valley Railway in England. Specifications: Cylinders: 2x 19x26 inch Valve gear: Walschaerts Boiler: Superheated, 5ft 10in 225 psi Leading Wheels: 2ft 9in Driving Wheels: 4ft 9in Weight: 124 tons Features of this Brickmania™ Kit: Brickmania's S160 Locomotive was skillfully crafted by award-winning train designers Cale Leiphart and Glenn Holland. New York Central Mohawk - L-2a 4-8-2 Steam Locomotive
SGD 5,625.00# BKM6004 The "Mohawk" moniker is the NYC's name for the 4-8-2 wheel arrangement (four pilot wheels, eight coupled driving wheels, and two trailing wheels). Conventionally, this type is known as a Mountain. The NYC decided to name them after the Mohawk river, which ran along their water level route, where the Mohawks were intended to run. The L-2a came about when the NYC wanted a locomotive to haul trains faster than their H10 class 2-8-2's. This new engine needed to be not only faster but larger as well, and it was found the previous generation of Mohawk, the L-1, had room to grow. Primary goals included achieving more power through minimum fuel consumption and weight. Height and width was also taken into account. The NYC's locomotives were designed to tighter clearances than most other lines, which is reflected on the L-2a and most of their other classes. One prototype L-2a, #2700, was delivered in March, 1925 and featured a number of details that were not standard to NYC locomotives. The railroad learned from this prototype and went on to order 99 production locomotives, 2701-2799, from American Locomotive Company, or ALCO, which were delivered roughly in the first five months of 1926 and remained in service into the early 1950's. The L-2a class sports 69" driving wheels with a cylinder bore and stroke of 27"x30" and an 84' - 7" wheelbase including the tender. The L-2a's were also delivered with a booster trailing truck, which included cylinders powering that wheel for extra assistance when starting a train. The L-2'as were delivered with a 21 ton coal capacity in the tender. Notes from BMR Designer Glenn Holland: All of the details mentioned above I have accurately represented on my model. I modeled locomotive #2743 specifically, reflecting some unique piping arrangements from other engines, including booster engine detail and the classic Elesco feedwater heater sitting atop the front of the smokebox, a key feature of NYC freight locomotives, and this class in particular. Most of the L-2a's received an upgraded coal capacity tender, moving to 25 tons. I have modeled this as it better represents the class; less than ten locomotives did NOT receive this upgrade. The model uses 2 Power Functions L motors and 2 IR receivers, allowing each motor to operate at full capacity. Both motors are powered from a custom 7.4V battery which offers a performance increase over the standard Power Functions AAA and Rechargeable battery. The connecting rods and Baker valve gear is custom parts modeled by myself using original blueprints and perfected for operation by Brickmania. It is a more accurate representation of Baker valve gear motion than I have achieved previously. The boiler and cab can be easily removed for servicing the motors. The power train is built up from the S160 design and has proven to be just as capable and strong. I've run this engine around my floor continuously and I have yet to have a problem with it. The L-2a has been on my project list for many years, being one of my favorite NYC freight locomotives and I'm glad to be able to start working more closely with Brickmania on railroad kits and also glad that I could start things off with this awesome example of 1920's fast freight power. DUKW - Amphibious Truck
SGD 247.50# BKM289 The DUKW (ubiquitously known as the "Duck") was a 2 1/2 cargo truck fitted with a boat shaped hull and a propeller for amphibious use during waterborne operations. DUKWs (designated by their GMC vehicle classification) was developed independently from the standard military procurement system in anticipation of waterborne invasions that would be a part of any American involvement in World War II. The DUKW was only reluctantly adopted by the US Army, who inititally did not see the need for such a craft. In practice, the DUKW proved an invaluable tool for bringing war material from ships to shore as well as saving thousands of lives by bringing back wounded soldiers to operating rooms in hospital ships off shore. Thousands of DUKWs were built during World War II and were used by the US Army, US Marines and Allied forces as well. SGD 382.50# BKM2172 Remark: Number on box is misprinted as 2113. Contains the 2017 version of minifigures with torso stickers. Considered by historians as key to Allied victory, the LCVP “Higgins” Boat was a simple design capable of placing men and material where they were needed. Prior to the Higgins, landing troops via amphibious assault was dangerous, slow, and ineffective. Previous designs fared poorly in shallow water and required soldiers to jump over the side of their craft. Although it was poorly received by the Navy, Louisiana businessman and boat-builder Andrew Higgins designed a boat that could operate in just three feet of water while carrying 8,000 pounds of cargo, thirty-six men, or twelve men and a Jeep. The design was simple – a boxy shape with an open top and a large, wide ramp that allowing soldiers or Jeeps to deploy quickly. Much of the boat was mahogany, a light and durable sub-tropical wood that allowed the boat to return to the sea after deploying its cargo. The Higgins arrived at precisely the right time. In the Pacific theater, amphibious assaults would be key to capturing islands from Japanese forces. In Europe, these assaults would be required to liberate both Italy and France. When Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, they deployed from over 800 of these landing craft. There are several famous images with Army Rangers deploying on Omaha Beach from the Higgins boat. This scene was also depicted in the award-winning film Saving Private Ryan, granting modern audiences a realistic look at the struggle by Allied forces. Many of the Allied commanders used the Higgins extensively, resulting in over 20,000 to be produced during the war period 1941-1945. The US military continued to use the basic Higgins design in future generations of amphibious landing craft. Specifications: Length: 36 feet (11 m) Engine: Gray Marine diesel (255 hp) Speed: 12 knots Armament: 2x Browning machine guns Crew: 4 Features of the LCVP kit include: Three custom WWII US Navy minifigs with torso stickers Two BrickArms M1919 Machine Guns Opening bow ramp with cable spool Includes 411 LEGO®, Brickmania™ and BrickArms® elements 1/35 scale matches other Brickmania models The over-all color scheme of this model is light gray Intermediate Skill Level (4-6 years experience with LEGO is recommended) This is a sturdy model that has been play tested by kids during World War Brick activities!
